UK Scholarships for African students 2018-2019


Scholarships for African students: Africa has been a great benefactor from the scholarship scheme. These schemes are mainly to elevate the education level and contribute to the growth of the developing countries.

Yearly, the United Kingdom offers a scholarship to Nigeria student and these scholarships are diverse in the sense that they are made available for undergraduates, masters, PhD and post-doctoral programs

Most of these scholarships are not easy to acquire because of their competitive level. Some of these scholarships are fully funded where the recipient is offered 100% tuition fee, and cost of living coverage while others are partially funded where the recipient is just given a fractional help. The fully funded scholarship is really hard to get because of the package and is mostly given to most intelligent and outstanding students.  Some of these scholarships are:

  1. Morton Award for International Excellence at University of Manchester.

This award is offered to an undergraduate in Chemical Engineering who have applied and have been offered admission. Where a yearly award of £1,000 will be given for four years.

  1. Academy Africa Research Fellowship at Chatham House in the United Kingdom

The Chatman house partners with Mo Ibrahim Foundation and their mission is to help build a sustainably secure, prosperous and just world. They applicant are expected to have exceptional written and spoken English skills and the recipient will be awarded £2,228 and a provision for travel expense and field work will be made.

  1. Mo Ibrahim Foundation MSc scholarship in Governance and State Building.

This is a two-year MSc scholarship in Governance and State Building offered by the International Development department. To enable the applicant to embark on the MSc, one-year internship including six months with the Mo Ibrahim Foundation. The recipient will be awarded a fully funded tuition fee, travel expense to and fro with a monthly allowance of £950 for 18months and Mo Ibrahim Foundation will cover the 6-month internship.

  1. Post Graduate Scholarship at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom.

This scholarship is offered to students with high academic performance and capabilities and outstanding English skill and must have applied and been offered admission to the University. The University offers its recipients 100% funding of their tuition fee.

  1. Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme for International Students.

This is a scholarship for master’s student from Commonwealth countries to study in University. This is for taught masters courses only and must be related to Economic, Social or Technological development. The department set it up for International Development. And eligible candidates must have a minimum of the second class upper. The recipient will be awarded fully funded tuition fee, return airfares and other allowance.

  1. British Council Future Leaders Connect Program for Young Leaders.                                                           

This scholarship is set out to influence change leading to long-term impact on the social and economic development. This scholarship covers the cost of accommodation, travels and feeding.

  1. The Cranfield University scholarship for Engineering Science.

The Cranfield University offers a scholarship to students in the sub-Saharan Africa who are pursuing masters in Aerospace Computational Engineering MSc, Computational Fluid Dynamics MSc and Computational & Software Techniques in Engineering. The applicant must have a minimum of second class upper and must be fluent in English and must have applied and received the offer from the college. The recipient is awarded a fully funded tuition fee; accommodation, travel expenses and cost of living will be covered.

  1. University of Birmingham Scholarship                                                                                  

This scholarship is offered by Birmingham and is offered to undergraduates Nigerian students who have applied and have received offers from the university and have outstanding academic performance and should be able to afford tuition fee and have been in contact with SI-UK.

  1. Biotechnology and Management International Scholarship at the University of Glasgow, United Kingdom. 

This scholarship is available to students who have applied and been offered admission in the university in MSc Biotechnology and the recipient will be rewarded with the sum of £10,000.

  1.   MSc Scholarship for African Students in economics at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom.

This is a yearly scholarship offered to master’s students in sub-Saharan Africa countries to study either Development Economics or Economics MSc and have applied and received an offer letter from the University. The recipient will be awarded a fully funded tuition fee and will receive an extra £10,000, which will be paid in instalment.

  1. Architect & Built Environment Excellence Scholarship. The University of Westminster.

This scholarship is offered to developing countries, which includes Nigeria for masters programs in architectural studies. And it covers their recipient’s tuition fee, the cost of living, the accommodation and the travel expense to and fro.

  1. Coventry University Nigeria Development Fund for Undergraduate and Master Student Scholarship to study in the United Kingdom.

The Coventry University offers undergraduate and master scholarship for self-funding Nigeria students applying for full-time courses in the university. This is to ease the burden on Nigerian students due to the increase in the exchange rate and the offer the undergraduate a discount of  £2,000 0ff their tuition fee that is a total of £6,000 for the undergraduate for the three years study and £2,000 for the master’s student since is a single year program.

  1. The University of Portsmouth Scholarship.

This is an annual scholarship offered by the university to Nigeria masters students who have applied and been offered courses in MSc Engineering Technology, MSc Geological and Environmental Hazard, MSc Environmental Geology & Contamination and MSc Crisis and Disaster Management. This scholarship is opened for applicants with a minimum of 3.0 GPA in relevant subjects and is a self-funding student. The recipient will be awarded a 20% discount off the tuition fee.

  1. Leventis Fellowship for Nigerian SOAS, University of London

This fellowship is offered to Nigeria students in Library and Archives and to participate in the intellectuals of life of the centre. The duration of this fellowship is 3 months and more suitable for PhD applicant who is currently working on their research.
